Art Styles Every Indie Game Developer Should Use to Ensure Gamers Fall in Love with Their Games
Table of contents
I have been learning game development for 5 years now. And what I can tell you (from experience) is that in order to succeed in this industry you need a great art style, music, good coding knowledge.
Low Poly 3D
This art style is popular among indie developers for its simplicity and ease of creation, allowing for faster production and creative expression. It runs well on many devices, expanding market reach. However, its lack of detail may not satisfy players seeking realistic graphics, limiting its appeal to certain audiences.
Cell shading
This art style offers a unique, comic-like aesthetic that distinguishes games visually, attracting players with its vibrant and stylized look. It can simplify asset creation, making development faster and more cost-effective. However, its niche appeal may not attract players seeking realism, and the style demands artistic skill to execute effectively.
Voxel
This art style offers a distinctive, retro aesthetic that appeals to nostalgia, simplifying asset creation and enabling easier scaling and modification. It supports procedural generation and can create complex worlds with low performance demands. However, voxel art can limit realism, potentially narrowing audience appeal, and requires specific design expertise.
Anime
Anime art attracts fans with its unique, expressive aesthetics and established fanbase, offering strong storytelling potential and emotional connection. Its vibrant style can boost marketing appeal. However, it demands skilled artists for authentic execution and risks being perceived as niche, limiting mainstream appeal without broad stylistic adaptation.
Pixel art
This art style excels in indie game development due to its nostalgic appeal and ease of use, allowing smaller teams to create visually engaging worlds with limited resources. Its simplicity enhances creativity and accessibility. However, it can be challenging to stand out in a crowded market, and some players may perceive it as outdated. Despite this, pixel art remains beloved for its charm and versatility.
