Everyone struggles with Procrastination.

Personally, I have for years.

I’m had always been fascinated by computers and in 2016 I decided to learn coding through an online course. Initially motivated, I planned to dedicate evenings to study, but soon found myself procrastinating, watching Yotube videos and scrolling through social media instead. Weeks passed, and the excitement turned to anxiety.

But what changed for me was identify the root of the problem and magane my time better. And as soon as that clicked, I started to understand that overcoming procrastination wasn’t that hard — I was just doing the wrong thing.

Here’s what I should have done instead:

  1. Identify the Cause: Understand why you’re procrastinating. Is it due to fear of failure, lack of interest, or feeling overwhelmed? Identifying the root cause can help you address it directly.
  2. Set Clear Goals: Break tasks into smaller, manageable goals. Define what you want to achieve and set specific deadlines for each step to make the tasks feel less daunting.
  3. Create a Schedule: Plan your day with a clear schedule. Allocate specific time slots for each task and stick to your schedule as much as possible.
  4. Eliminate Distractions: Identify what distracts you the most and find ways to minimize these distractions. This might include turning off notifications, using website blockers, or creating a dedicated workspace.
  5. Use the Pomodoro Technique: Work in short, focused bursts (e.g., 25 minutes), followed by a 5-minute break. This can help maintain focus and prevent burnout.
  6. Reward Yourself: Set up a reward system for completing tasks. This can motivate you to stay on track and make the process more enjoyable.
  7. Practice Self-Compassion: Don’t be too hard on yourself for procrastinating. Instead, acknowledge it and focus on making small improvements.
  8. Seek Accountability: Share your goals with a friend or colleague who can help keep you accountable. Regular check-ins can provide motivation and support.
  9. Reflect and Adjust: Regularly reflect on your progress and adjust your strategies as needed. Understanding what works best for you can help you refine your approach over time.

By implementing these strategies consistently, you can reduce procrastination and become more productive and focused on your work.
